SUMMARY:Public Arts\, Public Cities\, Public Talk by Jai Djwa in Port Coquitlam
DESCRIPTION:There are arguably fewer more urgent conversations taking place in the arts than those involving the emergence of Artificial Intelligence. Indeed\, the social\, cultural and economic impacts that AI poses to how we create and how we live and work together remain largely unknown. ArtsConnect invites you to a what promises to be a provocative and illuminating talk by Jai Djwa at The Outlet\, 2248 McAllister Avenue in Port Coquitlam on Tuesday 9 June 2026 at 5:30pm. \nAs Jai Djwa describes his talk\, Both Hands Full: Resilience as an Artist’s Practice in the Age of AI: “Resilience is a muscle artists already have. We remake our practice when conditions change\, and we work in the cracks of systems that weren’t built for us. AI is the latest condition to tackle\, and it asks for both hands. One hand holds the harms: scraped work\, lost commissions\, power consolidated in a few platforms\, and real environmental cost. The other holds what is opening up: new forms\, freedom from admin\, and faster ways to test an idea. Refusing both the booster and the doomer reflex is itself an act of resilience. Drawing on work with the BC Arts Council and Arts BC\, and on a current dance residency that investigates AI into live performance\, I offer a practical\, values-forward way for artists and arts communities to stay flexible\, stay specific\, and stay in the conversation.” \nJai Djwa is a Vancouver-based artist and educator whose practice spans electroacoustic composition\, AI-augmented interaction design\, and creative performance. With an MFA in Electronic Arts from RPI and 25+ years bridging art\, technology\, and social change\, he currently runs the Interaction Design program at Capilano University while exploring how AI agents can be personalized to an artist’s own voice. He served on the BC Arts Council for 6 years\, and is currently on the board of Arts BC. \nThis talk is presented as part of ArtsConnect’s “Public Walks\, Public Spaces\, Public Arts\, Public Cities” program. The 2026 program includes a series of related discussions on the place of the artist and the arts in creating socially\, culturally and economically dynamic and resilient communities in the Tri-Cities led by a diverse collection of professionals working across all forms of art\, culture\, architecture\, urban planning\, technology\, economics and more. Recent presentations have included Brian McBay’s talk on 30 May 2026 in Port Moody and forthcoming presentations include a talk by Kamala Jasmine Todd in Coquitlam on 20 June 2026 in partnership with the Coquitlam Public Library. \nArtsConnect gratefully acknowledges the support of the City of Coquitlam’s Spirit of Coquitlam Grant Program\, the City of Port Coquitlam Community Cultural Development Investment Program\, the City of Port Moody\, The Village of Anmore\, the Port Coquitlam Community Foundation\, and the Coquitlam Public Library.

SUMMARY:Lure Opening Reception: Fishing Kitchen Party!
DESCRIPTION:Bring your stories\, songs and fishing lore to celebrate the opening of Lure. Enjoy live music\, good food and warm conversation in the lobby (our stand-in kitchen) of Evergreen Arts and take in the art of Lure\, which looks at fishing through the eyes of six contemporary artists. Share your fishing stories\, poems or song in a thirty-minute open mic session and enjoy live music from Port Moody’s own East Coast transplants Adam and Sarah Faber. \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION \nFrom subsistence to livelihood\, from sport to ritual\, fishing links people from coast to coast to coast. This thematic group exhibition includes work by Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists across Canada with ties to the Pacific\, Arctic and Atlantic Oceans\, and the freshwater bodies that flow between. Together the artists explore the complex social and cultural significance of the ancient yet everyday activity of fishing. \nLure is generously supported by the Deux Mille Foundation.

SUMMARY:The Band's Visit
DESCRIPTION:FREE Film following PMFS’s famously brief AGM  – 2026 Film Society membership is REQUIRED – $5.00 for the year. CASH ONLY at the door \nA band comprised of members of the Egyptian police force head to Israel to play at the inaugural ceremony of an Arab arts center\, only to find themselves lost in the wrong town. With no transportation out of the town or any hotels to stay at\, the band settles at a restaurant owned by Dina who offers them lodging. What follows is a special night of quiet happenings and confessions as the band makes its own impact on the town and the town on them. Something marvelous happens as the filmmaker\, in his first feature\, expertly metes out small scenes of communication between people taught\, for generations\, to be wary of one another. This Band swings with visual wit\, verbal charm and a completely droll sense of humor. One can only hope that this film shows the potential for what the future can hold. \nComedy / Drama\nRuntime 1 hr 27 m\nIsrael\n2007 \nCLICK HERE TO watch the Offical Trailer for The Band’s Visit \n

SUMMARY:City of Port Moody: Celebrate a New Mural and Meet Artist Amy Bao
DESCRIPTION:The City of Port Moody invites the community to celebrate a new public art installation\, a mural titled West Coast by artist Amy Bao. Join us at the Rotary SK8 Park (2910 Murray Street) on Saturday\, June 13\, 2026 between 11am and 1pm – opening remarks are scheduled to start at 11:10am. We invite you to meet the artist\, engage with the mural (selfies encouraged!)\, and eat a sweet treat. \nThe completed mural is the culmination of the SK8 Park Mural Project\, a collaborative initiative that brought together local youth and professional artist Amy Bao to create a meaningful and vibrant public artwork. This project was developed in partnership with the City of Port Moody’s Youth Focus Committee and the artist\, with support from City staff. \n“A key goal of the SK8 Park Mural Project was to provide youth with an opportunity to express their voices\, creativity\, and identity in a visible and lasting way within their community\,” says Mayor Meghan Lahti. “Through mentorship and collaboration with an experienced artist\, participating youth gained insight into the artistic process while contributing to a shared civic space in the City of the Arts. This project supports the City’s vision of enriching daily life through accessible and inspiring public art\, fostering stronger connections between residents and their environment.” \nThe outdoor celebration event on June 13 will be held rain or shine – please dress for the weather. As parking in the area is limited\, please consider walking\, biking\, scootering\, or taking transit to the celebration. \nIn 2024\, the Youth Focus Committee had the idea to create a new mural that reflects the theme “Natural World of the West Coast.” In 2025\, the Committee shortlisted three artists\, conducted interviews\, and selected Amy Bao for the project. Bao\, based in Vancouver\, has created numerous murals across the Lower Mainland and is known for her nature-inspired work\, making her a strong fit for this project and location. \nYouth Focus Committee members contributed ideas and took part in painting a portion of the new mural\, and Bao ran two workshops: one for the Youth Focus Committee and one for participants at the 2026 Mayor’s Youth Summit. \nThe SK8 Park Mural Project continues the legacy of youth-driven public art at this site\, as the new piece replaces The Future is Behind Us\, part of a previous Youth Focus Committee mural project completed in 2009 with artist Kris Kupskay. The new mural is a dynamic and welcoming feature within the Rotary SK8 Park and Rocky Point Park\, enhancing the space for residents and visitors alike.
