ArtsConnect’s ArtsCalendar is a work in progress. Presently, we are working with a small group of arts organizations from across the Tri-Cities to develop the ArtsCalendar before we open up submissions from all arts organizations and we are not accepting direct submissions at this time. If your organization is interested in joining the ArtsCalendar in the future, please email your name, address, and a brief description of your organization to: [email protected]

Art Out Side Festival – Day 6

The Whitty Wily Poetry Connection
TIME: 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
LOCATION: Port Moody Farmers Market (300 Ioco Rd, Port Moody)
ARTIST: Claire Davis
An interactive performance-installation where poetry is generated, performed, and playfully disrupted. Audiences encounter Whitty Typo-Write (a mobile typewriter), Clarity the Poetichanic, and The Wily Soapbox 2000—an animated speaking platform with cranky contraptions and theatrical mischief. Poetry becomes tactile, public, and slightly unhinged in this fully co-created installation that is part clown ritual, part public experiment wrapped in enduring charm. Audiences are invited into spontaneous acts of writing: Composing sincere or absurd texts and amplifying their words through analogue spectacle. Part of the Monster Poetics series, this project delivers poetry without the permission slip.
“I am excited to be a part of Art Out Side because public art makes a place alive with possibility. It disrupts. It modulates the boundaries of the usual with blunt invitation and expectation, like a surprise tea party held in your honour on the sidewalk on your way to the dentist.” Claire Davis, Monster Poetics

(Re)scripting Mother Tongues: Asemic Writing Trading Card Workshop
TIME: 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
LOCATION: Port Moody Farmers Market (300 Ioco Rd, Port Moody)
ARTIST: Winston Lê
Through three generative exercises that straddles the lines between writing and visual art, participants will have the opportunity to either script their mother tongues (or create their own “constructed languages”) in the form of a set of art-based trading cards. Participants will get hands-on experience of using Lê’s cipher of the English alphabet, “ Alpha/broken.” After a decoding exercise, participants will script their very own visual alphabet and “rescript” a set of their very own mother tongue/invented language trading cards. Afterwards participants can discuss and exchange their trading cards with each other. This event will cap off with this cultural exchange of mother tongues.
“I am very excited to be part of this community of placemakers in curating art in public spaces.”
