SUMMARY:PMFS September Film: Manila in the Claws of Light
DESCRIPTION:Julio Madiaga\, a simple Pilipino fisherman from the countryside\, travels to Manila to find Ligaya\, the woman he loves\, who went away with a mysterious woman who promised her a better future in the City. When he arrives\, he becomes immersed in the city lifestyle and gets involved with its inhabitants\, experiencing extreme poverty\, hard luck\, and the overbearing need to grind for daily sustenance. While Julio relentlessly searches for Ligaya\, the city changes him little by little\, and he becomes like an animal doomed to live only for survival in a wild\, inescapable jungle. With ethical and emotional sophistication\, it dramatizes the suffering of the disadvantaged with characters that feel individual yet archetypal. This extraordinary film explores the destructive power of money and urban corruption\, how cities like Manila slowly consume the poor. Every institution\, from labor to media to law enforcement\, fails the characters. Their story isn’t rare. It’s ordinary. And that’s what makes it devastating. \nDrama / Mystery\nRuntime 2 hr 5 m\nPhilippines\n1975\nTV-14 \nTrailer for Manila in the Claws of Light \nDoors Open at 7pm \nTickets are CASH ONLY at the door \n$5 + $5 annual membership

SUMMARY:The Band's Visit
DESCRIPTION:FREE Film following PMFS’s famously brief AGM  – 2026 Film Society membership is REQUIRED – $5.00 for the year. CASH ONLY at the door \nA band comprised of members of the Egyptian police force head to Israel to play at the inaugural ceremony of an Arab arts center\, only to find themselves lost in the wrong town. With no transportation out of the town or any hotels to stay at\, the band settles at a restaurant owned by Dina who offers them lodging. What follows is a special night of quiet happenings and confessions as the band makes its own impact on the town and the town on them. Something marvelous happens as the filmmaker\, in his first feature\, expertly metes out small scenes of communication between people taught\, for generations\, to be wary of one another. This Band swings with visual wit\, verbal charm and a completely droll sense of humor. One can only hope that this film shows the potential for what the future can hold. \nComedy / Drama\nRuntime 1 hr 27 m\nIsrael\n2007 \nCLICK HERE TO watch the Offical Trailer for The Band’s Visit \n

SUMMARY:PMFS Presents the Iranian Film "Hit the Road"
DESCRIPTION:Hit the Road follows a chaotic\, tender family on a road trip across Iran through a rugged landscape\, fussing over the sick dog and getting on each others’ nerves. Only the mysterious older brother is quiet. A beautifully acted drama with steadily cumulative force\, Hit the Road uses one family’s journey to make trenchant observations about society as a whole. What really makes Hit the Road fly\, however\, is the fizzy interplay between the superb core actors. No offence is meant by noting parallels with a similarly nomadic family in Little Miss Sunshine. To be a passenger alongside these nervous voyagers\, as they clash\, tease and cherish each other on the way to this strange and terrible fork in their lives\, is to be a very fortunate moviegoer indeed. \nRoad Trip / Comedy / Drama\nRuntime 1 h 33 m\nIran\n2021\nPG-13 \nTrailer for Hit the Road \n\n\n\n\n\n\n$ 5.00 plus $ 5 annual membership.
