SUMMARY:Robert Riley: Split Wood Sculpture: Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 5 • 2025\nEnd date: November 6 • 2025 \n\n\n\nOnline: September 12 to November 6\, 2025\nOpening Reception: September 5 • 7 – 9 pm • more info \nWood Sculptures in the Atrium \nGrowing up in southern Ontario\, my mother often told me to go outside and find something to do. One day\, on my way out the back door I commandeered one of her paring knives from the kitchen. While sitting on the wooden back porch\, I cut my first carving into a stair tread – the letters “RR.” My mother was right! Get outside and do something. \nTo me\, creating split wood sculpture is like being in a forest. Watching tall trees bend to the force of the wind as their branches block the sun\, then let it back in. By finding my own path\, I discover and learn something new with each step. I let the wood show me the way. \nEach piece begins and remains one single piece of wood throughout the complex process of cutting\, saturating\, carving\, splitting and final blade sculpting. Once the sculpture is completely dry\, a combination of air and hand brush paint is applied. On average\, it takes about 10 days to complete a sculpture. When my walk with the single piece of wood is over\, I hold it my hand and reflect on our journey. \nWebsite: robertrileysplitwoodsculpture.ca

SUMMARY:Curated by Christine Mackenzie: Our Stories\, Our Voices: Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 5 • 2025\nEnd date: October 21 • 2025 \n\n\n\nOnline: September 12 to October 21\, 2025\nOpening Reception: September 5 • 7 – 9 pm • more info \nVarious mediums in the Leonore Peyton Salon \nPlease note: the Leonore Peyton Salon is a multi-purpose space; therefore\, viewing times are limited. Please call 604.664.1636 for viewing availability prior to your visit. \nBefore European settlers arrived in Canada\, women were a significant part of Indigenous communities and governments\, holding matriarchal roles of power and influence. As settlers sought to control Indigenous peoples\, they started destroying women\, which shattered Indigenous systems and communities. \nOur Stories\, Our Voices curated by First Nations artist and educator Christine Mackenzie\, honours Indigenous and Metis women by strengthening and empowering their voices through art. This exhibition showcases the range of power\, wisdom and transformative potential that women possess beyond their familial roles of mothers\, sisters and aunts. While these familial roles are important\, they are only a fraction of women’s identities. Women are leaders\, innovators\, creators and changemakers who are key to shaping more inclusive and resilient communities. Our Stories\, Our Voices aims to revive the matriarchy through art to build up communities through decolonization\, creating cultural safe spaces for everyone. \nEach artist in this exhibition is on their own artistic journey\, ranging from youth to elders; some artists are just beginning to learn their culture and others are deeply committed to Indigenous education. These artists use a variety of mediums to express their diverse and powerful stories. We must listen to their voices as they continue to shape and reshape the world around us. \nOur Stories\, Our Voices is supported by Coquitlam Foundation.

SUMMARY:Alejandra Morales Garza: Agua pasa por mi casa: Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 5 • 2025\nEnd date: October 21 • 2025 \n\n\n\nOnline: September 12 to October 21\, 2025\nOpening Reception: September 5 • 7 – 9 pm • more info \nPaintings and installation in the Mezzanine \nAs an artist\, I divide my time between Vancouver and Cozumel\, a beach town in Mexico. After spending three months in Cozumel last year\, I became fascinated by the fruit stand. I wondered if tourists were attracted to these fruit stands because they embody a romantic idea of Mexico – an escapism from the realities of daily life in Mexico and an idea of “paradise” that is commonly associated with the third world. While these stands might be colourful and folkloric\, they also serve as evidence of the financial instability in which so many Mexicans live. The journal El Economista notes that 55% of the occupied population of Mexico is part of an informal economy. \nTaking inspiration from installations by Sol Calero and Gabriel Orozco\, I have replicated a fruit stand in the exhibition space. Agua pasa por mi casa exposes the precariousness of informal commerce in Mexico and explores alternative forms of value. My work also questions the exoticizing gaze\, which is informed by how we look to the past and envision places we haven’t visited. \nWebsite: moralesalejandra.com\nInstagram: @festivefig

SUMMARY:"Maya Beaudry: Nesting" Tour & Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 6 | 5:30PM – 7:30PM\nFree to attend\, drop-ins welcome. \nJoin us for an exhibition tour with the artist Maya Beaudry\, followed by an opening reception for Nesting. Light refreshments will be served. The event is free and wheelchair accessible. \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION  \nMaya Beaudry builds spaces that breathe. Through layered textiles\, stitched architectures\, and photographic\, sculptural surfaces\, she gives form to the emotional residues of place—homes lost\, cities transformed\, and bodies remembered. Her practice is rooted in the material language of cloth and the conceptual terrain of memory\, navigating the threshold between the built and the felt. Drawing on the visual language of gentrified cities and vanishing spaces\, her practice recalls what has been lost while imagining new forms of habitation—ones that honor slowness\, decay\, and renewal. In doing so\, she transforms textiles into mnemonic architectures and offers viewers a place to dwell. \nImage: Maya Beaudry\, Childhood Home\, 2024\, digital pigment print on cotton\, 33 x 51 x 3 in. Image courtesy of the artist and Towards Gallery.
