SUMMARY:EVERGREEN THEATRE SERIES - The Knitting Pilgrim
DESCRIPTION:Dates:\nTUE 08 APR\n7:30 PM – 9:30 PM \nWED 09 APR\n7:30 PM – 9:30 PM \nTHU 10 APR\n7:30 PM – 9:30 PM \nFRI 11 APR\n7:30 PM – 9:30 PM \nSAT 12 APR\n3:00 PM – 5:00 PM \nSAT 12 APR\n7:30 PM – 9:30 PM \n\nThe Knitting Pilgrim\nby Kirk Dunn\n\nThe Knitting Pilgrim\, featuring actor and knitter Kirk Dunn\, is a multidisciplinary one-man show that combines personal storytelling\, image projection\, and three huge knitted panels that look like stained glass windows\, to explore the connection amongst the Abrahamic faiths: Judaism\, Christianity and Islam. The play recounts Kirk’s fifteen-year artistic and spiritual journey of hand-knitting the ambitious project\, and looks at why people struggle to get along today\, the meaning of art\, the hell of grant-writing and the power of love to overcome major obstacles (and minor mishaps). \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nIn 2003\, Kirk was awarded a significant Chalmers Foundation Fellowship through the Ontario Arts Council in support of Stitched Glass\, an installation of 5.5’ x 8’ tapestry panels\, knit in the style of stained glass. The work explores the commonalities and conflicts of the three Abrahamic faiths: Judaism\, Christianity and Islam. Kirk’s background as a PK – a preacher’s kid – inspired his interest in religion\, spirituality\, and interfaith empathy. With Stitched Glass\, he found a way to combine both his faith and textile interests. \nKirk could not have foreseen the scope of the work. It took 15 years of research\, design and knitting\, to finally complete all three tapestries. But then the question became\, how to share the installation with audiences so that it could do more than just sit in a gallery? Kirk’s profound desire was to use Stitched Glass to create an opportunity for interfaith dialogue. In 2018\, Kirk and his wife\, Claire Ross Dunn\, co-wrote The Knitting Pilgrim\, a multidisciplinary one-person theatrical experience that uses storytelling\, image projection and the Stitched Glass panels – collectively over 90 pounds of knitting – as its set. \nDirected by Jennifer Tarver\, and performed by Kirk\, the show recounts Kirk’s artistic and spiritual journey of hand-knitting the giant project\, and his hope to contribute to the vital conversation about xenophobia\, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia\, dealing with internal and external strife\, and fear of the other. \nThe show\, produced by Ergo Arts Theatre\, premiered at the Aga Khan Museum’s Auditorium in May\, 2019 and has already toured Ontario for 49 shows. It was given 6 out of 5 stars by CFMU Hamilton\, 5 out of 5 stars by Mooney on Theatre\, and was named a Critic’s Fringe Pick in Toronto\, Ottawa and Hamilton\, as well as One of ‘Top Ten Shows to See in May 2019’ by NOW Magazine. It tells the story of a journey that you need to experience. \n\nSINGLE TICKETS ON SALE:\nAdults: $47 | Seniors: $40 | Students: $16\nSave 20% with a Theatre Series subscription! \nBOX OFFICE: 604.927.6555 | Open Monday – Saturday\, 12 – 5PM

SUMMARY:Port Moody Film Society presents: Tampopo
DESCRIPTION:Port Moody Film Society presents:\nTampopo\nFriday\, April 11\, 2025 at 7:30pm \nCost: $5.00 + $5.00 Annual Membership \nIn this very Japanese paean to the joys of food\, trucker Goro rides into town like a modern Shane to help Tampopo\, the owner of a struggling diner. The movie is constructed as a series of episodes along the route to the perfect noodle restaurant. The social critique in “Tampopo” animates every scene\, and it accounts for why — even in an era of celebrity chefs\, food-porn Instagram accounts and cookery-as-contact-sport reality shows — the movie has lost none of its power to revivify the senses\, not least of all one’s sense of humor. This is a very funny movie. \nComedy/Satire\nRuntime 1 hour 54 minutes\nJapan\n1985\nRated 14A \nFor more info about the Port Moody Film Society\, click here.

SUMMARY:SECHILLE SEDARE
DESCRIPTION:SECHILLE SEDARE\nLeela Gilday & Jay Gilday\n\nA contemporary roots duo featuring sibling songwriters Leela Gilday and Jay Gilday. Sechile Sedare (pronounced ‘seh-chee-leh’ ‘seh-dahr-eh’) means ‘my younger brother\, my older sister’ in the Dene language. This musical collaboration sees Jay and Leela co-write and co-create new repertoire together\, harnessing their talents as deeply insightful and genuine storytellers. Their voices blend in perfect harmony\, hitting notes of nostalgia\, hope\, humour and reflection. The songs\, created during lockdown in 2021 and during a residency at the Banff Centre\, share stories about their family history\, their connection to the land and water\, and the twists and turns of fate. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS\n A vagabond turned mailman\, Jay Gilday has searched for himself in the depths of Folk\, blues\, traditional\, rock and most recently soul music. The quest continues as Jay takes his experiences as a half Dene\, half Canadian-Irish youth traveling the roads of Canada\, the daily roller-coaster of work\, family\, and performance and weaves them into song. Jay’s live performance is executed with a trained voice and a passion to drive it backed up by a heavy hitting guitar\, finger-style or flat-picked\, your choice! \nBorn and raised in the Northwest Territories\, Leela Gilday writes about the people and the land that created her. The power in her voice conveys the depth of her feelings of love and life in a rugged environment and vibrant culture\, as if it comes straight from that earth. Leela’s family is from Délįne on the shore of Great Bear Lake and her rich vocals dance across the rhythmic beats of traditional Dene drumming as smoothly as a bass line onstage the largest venues in the country. And she has played them all.

SUMMARY:Inlet Theatre Music Series - Mimosa
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for an unforgettable night of music at the Inlet Theatre. Join us for a fantastic performance by the talented band Mimosa. \nThis bilingual (French/English) Vancouver quintet draws on Jazz\, Brazilian Sambas\, French Chanson and Cabaret music to concoct its own unique sound: gorgeous melodies\, quirky lyrics\, incredible groove and sky-high improvisations. \nWith four critically acclaimed Cds and festival appearances all over Canada (including the Vancouver and Montreal Jazz Festivals)\, they have become CBC favourites\, selected first as the subject of a one-hour long documentary and more recently as one of four Western bands featured on television\, radio and the web\, in the popular “Mai de la chanson d’ici”. In September 2011 they also appeared on the French CBC show “Bien au show”\, for their final episode. In 2012\, Mimosa collaborated for the first time with dancers and a projectionist for a unique performance at the Sechelt Arts Festival. Recently\, Mimosa toured the Okanagan with a brand new repertoire of originals and interesting arrangements of standards. They have performed at many festivals\, including the Harmony Arts Festival\, the Gibsons Jazz Festival\, the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival\, the Fort Langley Jazz Festival\, Festijazz Rimouski\, Festival du Voyageur\, Winterruption\, the Montreal and Vancouver Jazz Festival (many times) and numerous others. \nMimosa’s music is composed predominantly by pianist Anna Lumiere\, with contributions from and collaborations with other band members. Some of their compositions have been used in film and television (Rise of the Gargoyles\, Mange ta ville\, etc). Lumiere also received a IMA composition award for Hotel des peines perdues and some of her songs have been rearranged for choir (Echos du Pacifique). \nThe band has just released their 4th album\, “Bien ensemble” on the label Cellar Music (Cory Weeds\, Vancouver)\, on March 29\, 2024. French CBC has also done a 20 year retrospective in the form of a short documentary about the band (“Le bonheur\, chanté par Mimosa”) \nThe band is made up of Rebecca Shoichet\, vocals\, Anna Lumiere (piano and accordion)\, Karen Graves (sax\, flute and vocals)\, Conrad Good (bass) and Bernie Arai (drums). Although every member of Mimosa is also active on the Canadian music scene in many other groups\, the band is celebrating its 25th year anniversary in 2024 and has developed a unique performance that will take you on an unforgettable journey into time and sound.
