SUMMARY:Jane's Walk Coquitlam
DESCRIPTION:Just what is it that makes a city the city that it is? What goes into what goes on in the streets and parks and paths that wind through the places that we live? What works? What doesn’t? What would you change? Why would you change it? What is it about the places we live and the spaces that we share that calls community together? Join curator\, historian and designer Markus Fahrner for an informative and engaging walk and conversation about the people and places and spaces and stories in Coquitlam’s Maillardville for a Jane’s Walk on Saturday 3 May 2025 from 11:00am to about noon. We will meet at the SW corner of Brunette and King Edward in Coquitlam. \nEach year Jane’s Walks take place in over 500 cities throughout the world. Starting in 2025\, ArtsConnect has signed on to organize Jane’s Walks in neighbourhoods across the Tri-Cities. These walking conversations about how we make the cities in which we live and work and play are inspired by Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) a writer\, urbanist and activist who championed a community-based approach to city-building. She had no formal training as a planner\, and yet her 1961 book\, “The Death and Life of Great American Cities\,” introduced important ideas about how cities function\, evolve\, and even how they fail. Jacobs lived in Greenwich Village until 1968 when she moved to Toronto. In both cities\, she helped derail the car-centred approach to urban planning and invigorated neighbourhood and community activism. Her activism and many writings continue to engage many of today’s architects\, planners\, policymakers\, activists\, citizens\, and other city builders. \nJane’s Walks in the Tri-Cities take place on the ancestral and unceded territories of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm which lies within the shared territories of the səlilwətaɬ\, q̓ic̓əy̓\, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm\, qiqéyt\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh\, and Sto’:lo.

DESCRIPTION:LIVE MUSIC | SATURDAY\, MAY 10 \nWe are thrilled to have Chapter 11 playing at Bevees. These talented gentlemen usually play downtown\, so don’t miss them while they are performing in the Tri-Cities. \nThey bring a contemporary style to all their music. Precise vocals over an “unplugged” smooth acoustic guitar highlight their material. You might even want to get up and dance! \nNo Cover Charge\, but we do ask everyone to buy a drink. 😃

SUMMARY:GORDIE TENTREES & JAXON HALDANE: YUKON ROOTS MUSIC
DESCRIPTION:GORDIE TENTREES & JAXON HALDANE: YUKON ROOTS MUSIC\n\nInternational award winning duo Gordie Tentrees & Jaxon Haldane have performed 1000 plus concerts together since their Texas stage debut in 2014. Armed with 10 instruments (banjo\, mandolin\, cigar box guitars\, fiddle- saw\, harmonica\, resonator\, acoustic\, porch bass\, snare) never repeating themselves onstage with brotherly harmonies & masterful storytelling. From headlining Celtic Connections (Glasgow) to the Woody Guthrie Festival (Oklahoma) they never repeat\, juggling the dark with the light\, brotherly harmonies & masterful storytelling. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS\n2023 International Acoustic Music Award (IAMA) winners Gordie Tentrees (Yukon) and Jaxon Haldane (Manitoba) met in 2005 (Fred Eaglesmith Picnic\, Ontario) and swapped records before hitting the road with disparate musical aspirations. Gordie performed over 3000 concerts around the world\, often touring as Eaglesmith’s opening act\, learning about the music business\, and leveraging his previous experience in the boxing ring (3x Golden Glove champ). Tentrees also toured with James Cotten\, Mary Gauthier\, Kelly Joe Phelps\, Steve Poltz\, and Ray Wylie Hubbard\, to name a few.  Jaxon was meanwhile tearing up stages from Churchill to Belfast (D.Rangers bandleader/banjo player)\, producing records for his indie label (Dollartone)\, and touring with the likes of Petunia\, The Sadies\, Jon Spencer\, and Romi Mayes.  His close relationship with lifelong musical hero and mentor Willie P. Bennett led to Haldane recording Willie’s last record\, Sharpen The Plow\, just prior to Bennett’s passing in 2008.  Haldane founded the Willie P. Bennett Legacy site to pay tribute to his deceased friend. Interestingly\, Bennett and Eaglesmith spent 25 years performing and touring\, setting an example of camaraderie and excellence that still guides the way for Tentrees and Haldane.

SUMMARY:PoMo Players Table Reading of the Radio Play "A Christmas Carol"
DESCRIPTION:PoMo Players has planned a free private table reading of the radio play “A Christmas Carol”. It will take place at the CityState Boardroom on Tuesday\, May 13th from 6:30pm – 10pm. \nNo experience is necessary\, just a passion for theatre and a willingness to have fun! \nA Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play\nFrom the novella by Charles Dickens\, adapted for the stage by Joe Landry \nThe Charles Dickens holiday classic comes to life as a live 1940s radio broadcast\, complete with vintage commercials for fruitcake (extra-fancy)\, and the magic of live sound effects and musical underscoring. A handful of actors bring dozens of characters to the stage\, as the familiar story unfolds: Three ghosts take Ebenezer Scrooge on a thrilling journey to teach him the true meaning of Christmas. A charming take on a family favorite that will leave no one saying “Bah Humbug!” \nThere are over 30 roles in this production so we will switch out actors to allow for multiple readers per role and multiple roles per reader. \nPlease email PoMo Players if you are interested in being involved!\nemail: pomoplayers@gmail.com
