SUMMARY:Port Moody Film Society Presents: My American Cousin
DESCRIPTION:Port Moody Film Society Presents:\nMy American Cousin \nFor our FREE film this June\, following our AGM\, we’ve chosen the classic Canadian coming of age tale\, My American Cousin\, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Sandy is a bored 12-year-old preparing for another long and uneventful summer in rural 1950s British Columbia when her older cousin\, Butch\, arrives unexpectedly from California in a shiny red convertible. Of course\, the impressionable Sandy is immediately dazzled by Butch’s cool\, rock’n’roll swagger; his appearance seems to promise all the excitement that Sandy has been longing for. Based on writer-director Sandy Wilson’s own memories\, My American Cousin won multiple Genie Awards including Best Picture\, Best Director\, Best Original Screenplay\, Best Actor and Best Actress. Capturing the restlessness of youth with a fresh and funny perspective\, Wilson’s genuinely charming period piece is forever reaching for lost innocence as it playfully contrasts Canadian and American attitudes. \nDrama/Comedy\nRuntime 1 hour 35 minutes\nCanada\n1985\nRated PG

SUMMARY:Public Art in Public Space Public Talk with Jordan Strom
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 14 June 2025\, ArtsConnect presents a free public talk on public art by Curator Jordan Strom at Inlet United Church at the Springs in Port Moody. For “Infinity in a Footprint\, Kalpas in the Sand\, Blessings in a Mudflower: Memory\, Myth\, and Time-Travel in the Post-Suburb\,” Strom will examine several artworks that deploy science fiction\, ficto-historical interventions\, and myth to examine the present within the post-suburbs of Metro Vancouver. Taking its title from a text-artwork by Lakshmi Gill\, the presentation will discuss works by Jim Adams\, Manjot Kaur\, Mark Soo\, Kevin Schmidt\, Roxanne Charles\, Charles Campbell\, Cindy Mochizuki\, Phyllis Atkins\, James Nizam and Diane Roy. While situating these practices within a longer arc of late twentieth century art\, Strom will also respond to several recent urban theories of suburbs/edge cities and the need to reimagine their relevance in the twenty-first century. \nJordan Strom is Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at Surrey Art Gallery. Current and recent projected include “Annie Briard: Refracted Fields” (2025)\, “Charles Campbell: An Ocean to Livity” (2023)\, and “Cindy Mochizuki: Autumn Strawberry” (2022). Jordan has a MA in Critical and Curatorial Studies from the University of British Columbia. He is currently a PhD student at Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts/Individualized Interdisciplinary Studies\, where he is working on a book and exhibition related to Vancouver’s 1986 world’s fair and Canadian art that will take place in 2026. \nThis talk is presented as part of ArtsConnect’s “Public Walks\, Public Spaces\, Public Arts\, Public Cities” program. The program includes a series of related discussions on the role and nature of public art in the Tri-Cities lead by a diverse collection of people in all forms of art\, architecture\, urban planning focussing on questions from just what is it that makes a space public to what place does public art have in public conversations about the complex nature of a community’s public life? Previous presentations have included talks by Dr. Tatiana Mellema in Port Coquitlam in April 2025 and Tasha Faye Evans in Coquitlam in May 2025. \nArtsConnect gratefully acknowledges the support of the PoCo Foundation and the City of Port Coquitlam Community Cultural Development (CCD) Investment Program\, the Village of Anmore and the City of Port Moody.
