DESCRIPTION:INVOCATIONS\nThe Bergmann Piano Duo with Special Guest Paolo Bortolussi\nABOUT THE SHOW\nVancouver-based flutist Paolo Bortolussi will be joining The Bergmann Duo for a programme featuring an enticing blend of different musical styles and genres that reflect some of the cultural influences from our musical pasts.  A seminal work of the repertoire\, Prokofiev’s Sonata for flute and piano in D Major will be featured alongside Astor Piazzolla’s suite L’Histoire du Tango\, Cameron Wilson’s delightful Celtic Partita as well as some gems of traditional Irish and Canadian folk music- and more! \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nPAOLO BORTOLUSSI | Raised in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, Paolo Bortolussi has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across Canada\, the US\, and Asia. A specialist in contemporary music\, Paolo has premiered over 400 solo and chamber works\, including concerti written for him by Jian-Ping Tang\, Dorothy Chang\, Aaron Gervais\, Ramsey Sadaka\, and Jocelyn Morlock. In 2016\, Paolo released his solo album\, Israfel – music for flute and electronics\, on the Redshift label\, which includes works by Keith Hamel\, Larry Lake\, John Oliver\, and Kaija Saariaho. The album received two nominations at the 2016 Western Canadian Music Awards\, including Artist of the Year. \nCurrently principal flutist and new music advisor with the Vancouver Island Symphony\, Paolo has appeared as soloist multiple times with the VIS as well as the Albany (NY) Symphony\, the Turning Point Ensemble\, Canada West Chamber Orchestra\, and has performed as a guest with every major orchestra and ensemble in BC. He is featured on many recordings of new music for flute\,  including A Quinary\, which features five new concerti performed by the Vancouver Island Symphony with various soloists\, and was nominated for five Western Canadian Music Awards. Jocelyn Morlock’s Ornithomancy for flute and orchestra is featured on the album and was written for Paolo. In November\, 2014\, Paolo performed and recorded Dorothy Chang’s flute concerto “Flight” with the University of British Columbia Symphony under Maestro Jonathan Girard – this recording led to Chang being nominated for composition of the year at the Junos\, and won the award at the Western Canadian Music Awards. In the past year\, Paolo was a faculty member at the Banff Centre for the Arts Interplay: Chamber Music and Opera program\, traveled to Singapore with the Sound of Dragon Ensemble to showcase works for mixed Chinese and Western ensemble\, was guest principal flute with the Vancouver Symphony for a performance of Ligeti’s Chamber Concerto and other works\, was featured on CBC Radio’s “Road to the Junos” series\, and premiered over 25 new works involving flute. \nA graduate of the University of Ottawa (B.Mus) and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (M.Mus\, D.M.A)\, Paolo is a lecturer in flute\, chamber music and contemporary music at the University of British Columbia School of Music\, where he also directs the Contemporary Players Ensemble. \nTHE BERGMANN PIANO DUO | The Bergmann Duo’s dynamic and energetic performances of uniquely eclectic programmes\, which include numerous own arrangements and compositions\, have inspired audiences internationally. They have performed in concert and with orchestra in: Canada\, the USA\, Italy\, Germany\, The Netherlands\, Spain\, Portugal\, France\, Macedonia\, Greece and China.
