Port Moody Film Society July Movie: “Aitamaako’tamisskapi Natosi: Before the Sun”

There are many sports documentaries in the world, but few are as patient and focused as this one from director Banchi Hanuse about the thrilling and terrifying world of bareback relay horse racing.ย Aitamaakoโtamisskapi Natosi: Before the Sunย follows Logan Red Crow, a young Siksika woman who has been watching the race since childhood. Traditionally, only males competed in this heart-pounding event, but times are changing and young women are gravitating towards such sports despite its challenges. We get to see Red Crowโs day-to-day life, from waking up at the crack of dawn to the intense training she goes through to get ready. The cinematographers include beautiful shots of the land, in the tradition of the best nature documentaries. Watching the horses storm through the pastures under the warm glow of the sun is truly awe-inspiring and exemplifies the vigour demanded of the sportโs competitors.
The connections explored here are profound and lasting: those between Father and Daughter, animal and human, family and community, ancestral tradition and contemporary life. Graceful, compelling and uplifting, this is an inspirational gem.
